Short description
The butcher has disappeared.
131 Roma were convicted.
No bodies. 41 Roma were publicly executed.
Still no bodies, no evidence.
Only confessions extracted under torture.
In 1782, in Hont County, a butcher disappeared. Although his body was never found, the incident led to the arrest of hundreds of Roma people. Based on confessions extracted under brutal torture, 131 individuals were convicted; 41 were publicly hanged, beheaded, or broken on the wheel. The survivors were sentenced to forced labor, while their children were taken away from them and placed in orphanages or with peasant families. “Cannibals” serves as a worthy memorial to this brutal event.
“This is not the first time in history when a casually dropped remark has had unforeseeable consequences. When the defining figures of a given era single out a community or a social group and make them the chief culprits, the source of all problems—because of their skin color, lifestyle, sexual orientation, or religion.”
